Metals & Density Gold Panning Project
Metals are signifacantly more dense than water and many other elements. The principle behind gold panning is that gold is 19.3 times as dense as water and will remain in the bottom of the gold pan while water and lighter materials will wash out of the pan. Our gold strike panning kit teaches how to pan for gold and other precious metals. It includes a 10 1/2" riffled gold pan, suction pipet, display vial, instructions, a bag of sand containing fool's gold nuggets and dust, and a gold strike bag containing a nugget of gold, silver, copper, and hematite for you to pan out at home. Learn how to pan for precious metals and show it as part of your science project display. For more information about the Gold Strike Kit click here.

Identifying Rocks & Minerals by Hardness Test
One way to identify rocks is by hardness. A hard rock will scratch a softer rock. Scrape a sharp edge of one rock across the surface of another, if it leaves a scratch you know which is harder. In the Mohs hardness scale, hardness is rated on a scale of 1-10 where 1 is softest and 10 hardest as shown. Each mineral has its own hardness, for example obsidian has a hardness of 5.5 so it would scratch apatite but not microcline. By determining the hardness of any given specimen, you can identify it. mohs hardness scale, science projects
